About the Artist

  Artist Statement:

Process oriented and abstract, my work does not start with a conscious subject matter.  I pour, scrape, brush, draw, wipe, and otherwise manipulate luscious liquid colors, watching for the shapes, hues, and textures that will  coalesce into an image, with a meaning hovering just below conscious identification. I am looking for something I have not seen before.

Challenge, calculated chance, and luck are all part of the process. It is not quite a straight, logical path from inception to resolution. It gets messy, disquieting, and, if the work succeeds, satisfying: a calming recognition of all I yearn toward knowing.

I work primarily with oil paints on gessoed wood panels and stretched canvas. Sometimes I also throw coffee, furniture polish, eggs, paint remover, gravel, latex, dry pigments, and linen into the mix.

Some panels are meant to be exhibited flush to each other, either horizontally or vertically, jelling into a work larger than you can take in all at once, meant to be scanned left to right and back again, sequentially. Unconscious identifications can change meaning over time.

2’ x 4’ is my common size for individual panels, both horizontal and vertical.

I was trained as a painter at:

Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts: Atelier M. Nallard, Paris, France

Art Center College of Design: Pasadena, California

Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture: Skowhegan, Maine

I have a B.A. Degree in Philosophy (U.C. Santa Cruz) and a M. A. Degree in Human Development (Pacific Oaks College).
